bell hooks

Born and raised in rural Kentucky, bell hooks is a teacher, author, and speaker on race, gender, class, and personal empowerment. She has published over ten books, including "Sisters of the Yam," "Black Looks," "Yearning," and (with Cornel West) "Breaking Bread." Her first book, "Ain't I a Woman," published in 1981, was named one of the "twenty most influential women's books of the last twenty years" by Publishers Weekly. She currently lives in New York City and teaches at City College of New York.
